We’re proud to be one of the first salons in the North East to offer such a wide and inclusive range of services for all hair types under one roof. Philomena has carefully built a team of independent stylists who each bring something unique — from dreadlocks, braiding, and weaves to colouring, wigs, curly hair expertise and holistic hair health. Plus, of course, your everyday cutting and styling services.

We look forward to welcoming you into the salon, but if you can’t make it in, don’t worry. We stock a range of hair essentials we truly believe in, so you can care for your hair confidently at home. Each product is carefully selected by our team, tried and tested on real clients (and ourselves!), so you know you're getting the good stuff.

Who is Philmak?

Phil Mak Hair was founded by Philomena van Konijnenburg (formerly Philomena Makhumula-Nkhoma), a qualified hair stylist since 2013. In 2020, Philomena transformed part of her home into a cosy and professional salon space, built on the values of inclusivity, expertise, and healthy hair care.
And yes’ we had to shorten the name. Otherwise, you’d be here all day trying to pronounce it, let alone remember it!

We might be tucked away in a smaller space, but don’t be fooled, this salon is full of big talent. Whether it’s specialist care for curly hair, precision braiding, loc maintenance, or rejuvenating hair wellness treatments, our team delivers the kind of results you’d expect from a high-end salon , just with a more personal touch.
